1. PEOPLE who live on dry land cannot well know to what dangers the poor sailor is exposed. Sometimes for whole weeks, in stormy weather, he has to go in wet clothes, and suffer almost all the time from cold.

2. The ship will toss so that he cannot walk a step without holding on to something. Sometimes a great sea will sweep over the deck, and carry off planks, casks, spars, and hen-coops; and then, if a sailor is not careful, and does not hold on to a rope or to the sides of the vessel, he, too, will be swept overboard.

3. The picture shows a ship that has been struck by lightning. Parts of her masts have been carried away. Her three masts are called the mizzen-mast, the main mast, and the fore'mast. The mizzen-mast is that nearest the stern.

4. The sea sweeps over this ship so heav'i-ly that

it seems as if she must be upset. When a ship is thrown down on the water, so that her masts lie flat upon it, she is said to be on her beam ends. There is danger that this ship will be thrown on her beam ends.

5. I was once on board a ship that lay in this situ-a'tion for some hours. We were near the shore. Soon a life-boat, with some brave men in it, came off from the shore to save us.

6. On board of our ship we had a bear, whom we called Nick. He had been very cross for some days. He would growl and snap at you, if you tried to touch him. We thought we should have to shoot him, lest he should hurt somebody.

7. But no sooner did Nick become aware of the danger that we were in, than he changed his temper all at once. He grew mild and a'mi-a-ble, and would come and fawn upon us, and lick our shoes. He tried hard to make us think he was our friend.

8. "Ah, Nick!" thought I, "you are like many people in the world, who, in their pros-per'i-ty, are cross to us, but who, when they see that we can help or save them, become very kind and civil.”

9. However, we saved poor Nick; he went on shore with us in the life-boat, and was ever afterwards a very well-behaved bear. But he could never be persuaded to go to sea again.

10. There is no class of men who have to undergo so many pri-va'tions and dangers as sailors. For how many of the comforts we enjoy are we in-debt'ed to the men who cross the sea in ships!

CXXII.

KINDNESS TO ANIMALS.

1. LITTLE children, never give
Pain to things that feel and live:
Let the gentle robin come

For the crumbs you save at home.

2. Never hurt the timid hare,

Peeping from her green grass lair;
Let her come and sport and play
On the lawn at close of day.

3. The little lark goes soaring high
To the bright and sunny sky;
O! let him sing his happy song,
Nor do these gentle creatures wrong.

1. My son, forget not my law;

But let thine heart keep my commandments:
For length of days, and long life,

[blocks in formation]

2. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee;

Bind them about thy neck;

Write them upon the table of thine heart:

So shalt thou find favor and good understanding
In the sight of God and man.

3. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart,

And lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge Him,

And he shall direct thy paths.

Be not wise in thine own eyes;

Fear the Lord, and depart from evil.

4. Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father,

[ocr errors]

And attend to know understanding.

For I give you good doctrine,

Forsake ye not my law.

For I was my father's son,

Tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

5. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words;

Keep my commandments, and live.

Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not;
Neither decline from the words of my mouth :
Forsake her not; and she shall preserve thee :
Love her, and she shall keep thee.

6. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: And with all thy getting, get understanding.

Exalt hes, and she shall promote thee:

She shall bring thee to honor, when thou dost em

brace her.

She shall give to thine head an ornament of
A crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

7. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings,

And the years of thy life shall be many.
I have taught thee in the way of wisdom;
I have led thee in right paths.

8. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go
Keep her; for she is thy life.

Enter not into the path of the wicked,
And go not in the way of evil men.

grace:

9. Avoid it, pass not by it,

Turn from it, and pass away.

For they sleep not, except they have done mischief: And their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

10. For they eat the bread of wickedness,

And drink the wine of violence.

But the path of the just is as the shining light, That shineth more and more unto the perfect day. 11. The

way of the wicked is as darkness: They know not at what they stumble. My son, attend to my words;

Incline thine ear unto my sayings.

12. Let them not depart from thine eyes;
Keep them in the midst of thy heart.
For they are life unto those that find them,
And health to all their flesh.
