1. SAMUEL.

CHAP. I.

5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had fhut up her womb.

6 And her adverfary alfo provoked her fore, for to make her fret, becaufe the Loan had shut up her womb.

7 And as he did fo year by year, when the went up to the houfe of the LORD, fo the provoked her; therefore the wept, and did not eat.

12 And it came to pafs, as the con tinued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

13 Now Hannah, fhe fpake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought fhe had been drunken.

14 And Eli faid unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

15 And Hannah answered and faid, No, my lord, I am a woman of a forrowful fpirit: I have drunk neither wine nor ftrong drink, but have poured out my foul before the LORD.

16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I fpoken hitherto.

17 Then Eli anfwered and faid, Go in peace: and the God of Ifrael grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

18 And the faid, Let thine hand8 Then faid Elkanah her husband maid find grace in thy fight. So the to her, Hannah, why weepeft thou? woman went her way, and did eat, and why eateft thou not? and why is and her countenance was no more thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten fons?

28 Therefore alfo I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he thall be lent to the LORD. And he worthipped the LORD there.

CHAP. II.

ND Hannah prayed, and faid.

14 And he ftruck it intothe pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleth hook brought up the prief touk for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Ifraelites that came thither.

15 Alfo before they burnt the fat, the prieft's fervant came, and faid to the man that facrificed, Give flesh to roaft for the prieft: for he will not have fodden fleth of thee, but raw.

16 And if any man faid unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat prefently, and then take as much as thy foul défireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.

17 Wherefore the fin of the young

A My part rejoiceth in the LORD, men was very great before the LORD

CHAP. IN.

29 Wherefore kick ye at my facri fice and at mine offering, which I bare com nanded in my habitation; and honouret thy fans above me, to make yourfelves fat with the chief est of all the offerings of Ifrael my people?

4 That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am 1.

5 And he ran unto Eli, and faid, Here am 1; for thou calledit me. And he faid, I called not; he down again. And he went and lay down.

6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel And Samuel arofe and went to Eli, and faid, Here am 1; for thou didnt call me And he aniwered, I called not, my fon; lie down again.

7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.

8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and faid, Here am I; for thou didЛt call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child

9 Therefore Eli faid unto Samuel, Go, lie down and it fhall be, if he 30 Wherefore the LORD God of If-call thee, that thou fhalt fay, Speak, mel faith, I faid indeed that thy houfe and the houfe of thy father fhould walk before me for ever; but now the LORD faith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will Amour, and they that defpife me hall be lightly esteemed.

31 Behold, the days come, that will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's houfe, that there fhall not be an old man in thine house.

32 And thou fhalt fee an enemy in myhabitation, in all the wealth which God thall give Ifrael: and there fhall not be an old man in thine houfe for Ever.

33 And the man of thine, whom fall not cut off from mine aftar, al be to confume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart and all the increafe of thine houfe fhall die in the flower of their age.

34 And this ball be a fign unto thee, that hall come upon thy two fons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they hall die both of them.

35 And I will ralfe me up a faithful pric, toat fhall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind and I will build him a fure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.

36 And it fhall come to pafs, that every one that is left in thine houfe hall come and crouch to him for a piece of tilver and a morfel of bread, and fhall fay, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the prieft's offices, that may eat a piece of bread.

CHAP. III.

ND the child Samuel miniftered Avto the Loga before Ell Α vato the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in thefe days; there was no open vifion. 2 And it came to pafs at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim thai teunt fee;

14 And therefore I have fworn unto the houfe of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's houfe thall not be purged with facrifice nor offering for ever.

15 And Samuel lay until the morn ing, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to fhew Eli the vision.

16 Then Eli called Samuel, and faid, Samuel, my fon. And he answered, Here am 1.

17 And he faid, What is the thing that the LORD háth faid unto thee? pray thee, hide it not from me: God do fo to thee, and more alfo, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he faid unto thee.

18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he faid, It is the LORD: let him do what feemeth him good

19¶And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

20 And all Ifrael, from Dan even to Beer-fheba, knew that Samuel waseftablifhed to be a prophet of the LORD.

21 And the LORD appeared again. in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himfelf to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Loan.

The Ifraelites overcome.

CHAP. IV.

I. SAMUEL. Dagon falletb before the ark. years old, and his eyes were dim, that he could not fee.

ND the word of Samuel came to A all Ifrael. Now Ifrael went out against the Philiftines to battle, and pitched befide Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

16 And the man faid unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. 10 And the men did fo; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and fhut up their calves at home:
