7 THOU art a covert unto me;

THOU guardest me from distress;

THOU dost encompass me with songs of deliverance.

"And show thee the way, wherein thou shouldest walk. "I will counsel thee,

"MINE eye shall be upon thee.

"Be ye not as the horse or the mule,

"Which have no understanding,

"Whose mouth must be holden with bridle and curb,

"Or they will not come nigh unto thee."

10 Many are the troubles of the wicked;

But mercy encompasseth him, who trusteth in JEHOVAH.

11 Rejoice in JEHOVAH, and exult, ye righteous!

And sing aloud, all ye who are upright in heart!

PSALM XXXIII.

1 SING aloud of JEHOVAH, ye righteous, Praise is becoming to the upright.

2 Praise ye JEHOVAH, with the harp;

With the ten-stringed lute, hymn ye unto Him. 3 Sing unto Him a new song,

Strike the harp sweetly, with shouts of triumph.

5 HE loveth righteousness and equity;

The earth is filled with the loving-kindness of JEHOVAH.

6 By the word of JEHOVAH were the heavens made,

And all their hosts, by the breath of His mouth. 7 HE gathered together the waters of the sea, as in a heap, He laid up the great deep, as in a treasure-house. 8 Let all the earth stand in awe of JEHOVAH; Let all the inhabitants of the world fear Him.

9 For He spake, and it was done!

HE commanded, and it stood firm !

10 JEHOVAH frustrateth the counsel of the heathen,
HE maketh fruitless the devices of the nations.
11 The counsel of JEHOVAH standeth firm for ever-
The devices of His heart, to all generations.

12 Happy the nation, whose God is JEHOVAH—
The people, whom He hath chosen for His inheritance!

13 JEHOVAH looketh down from heaven,

HE beholdeth all the children of men.

14 From the place of His habitation,

He surveyeth all the inhabitants of the earth.

15 HE it is, who formeth all their hearts;

He it is, who discerneth all their doings.

16 No king is saved by a great host,

Nor a mighty man rescued by his great strength. 17 Vain is reliance on the horse for safety;

It cannot deliver by its great power.

6 their hosts-i. e. the stars, "the armies above shining in the firmament of heaven," which "at the commandment of the Holy One stand in their order and never faint in their watches." Ecclus. xLiii. 8, 9, 10. Compare Gen. ii. 1. Deut. iv. 19. xvii. 3.

9 it was done-Heb. it was. i. e. the word which He spake was accomplished.

11 to all generations-Heb. to generation and generation.

17 Vain is reliance on Heb. a vain thing (is). "The horse is prepared against the day of battle:

18 Lo, the eye of JEHOVAH is upon those, who reverence Him— Who wait in confidence for His loving-kindness;

19 To rescue them from death,

And to keep them alive, in time of famine.

20 Our soul waiteth for JEHOVAH,

He is our help, and our shield.

21 Truly, in Him our heart rejoiceth;

Truly, in His holy Name do we put our trust.

22 May Thy loving-kindness, O JEHOVAH! be upon us, Since we wait in confidence for Thee!

PSALM XXXIV.

1 I WILL bless JEHOVAH at all times,
His praise shall be continually in my mouth.

2 In JEHOVAH will I make my boast; The meek shall hear, and be gladdened.

3 Magnify JEHOVAH with me,

And let us extol His Name together.

+ I sought JEHOVAH, and He answered me, And delivered me from all my fears.

5 They look unto Him, and are enlightened, And their faces are not ashamed.

but safety is of the LORD." Prov. xxi. 31. "Neither shall he that rideth the horse, deliver himself." Amos ii. 15. See also Ps. xx. 7. CXLVii. 10.

20 Our soul waiteth- i. e. we wait.

5 They-i. e. the meek. See ver. 2. enlightened i. e. exhilarated, owing to their confidence in God.

6 This afflicted man called, and JEHOVAH heard, And saved him out of all his troubles.

7 The angels of JEHOVAH encamp

About those who reverence Him, and rescue them.

8 Taste, and ye shall perceive that JEHOVAH is good. Happy the man, who taketh refuge with Him!

9 Reverence JEHOVAH, ye His holy ones,

For those, who reverence Him, lack nothing.

10 The lions suffer want and hunger;

But those, who seek JEHOVAH, lack no good thing.

11 Come, children, hearken unto me,

I will teach you the reverence of JEHOVAH.

12 Who is the man, that desireth life-
That loveth length of days-to see prosperity?

15 The eyes of JEHOVAH are upon the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry.

16 The face of JEHOVAH is against those, who do evil, To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry aloud, and JEHOVAH heareth, And delivereth them out of all their distresses.

18 JEHOVAH is nigh unto the broken-hearted, And He saveth the wounded in spirit.

19 Many are the ills of the righteous man,
But from them all doth JEHOVAH deliver him.

20 HE preserveth all his bones;

Not one of them is broken.

21 Wickedness bringeth death to the wicked,
And those, who hate the righteous, are punished.

22 JEHOVAH redeemeth the lives of His servants,
And none, who take refuge with Him, are punished.

PSALM XXXV.

1 CONTEND, JEHOVAH! with those, who contend with me; Fight Thou against those, who fight against me.

2 Lay hold on shield and buckler,

And rise up to mine aid.

17 The righteous-Heb. they. See ver. 15.

18 wounded-Heb. bruised, i. e. those righteous persons whose minds are broken down by the calamities and oppression which they are suffering.
