36 THOU givest me ample space on which to tread,

And mine ankles do not falter.

37 I pursue mine enemies, and overtake them;

Nor do I turn back, until I have made an end of them. 38 I smite them, so that they cannot stand;

They fall under my feet.

39 THOU girdest me with might for the battle;

THOU layest low beneath me those, who rise up against me. 40 THOU makest mine enemies to turn their backs unto me; As for those who hate me, I destroy them.

41 They cry aloud, but there is no one to save-
Unto JEHOVAH, but He answereth them not.

42 I beat them to powder, like dust before the wind,
I trample them down, like the mire of the streets.
43 THOU deliverest me from the strivings of the people,
THOU dost make me head of the nations;

A people, whom I know not, become subject to me.
44 As soon as their ear hath heard, they attend unto me;
The sons of the alien make a show of submission to me.
45 The sons of the alien shrink with fear,

And come out of their strong holds.

46 JEHOVAH liveth! and blessed be my Rock,
And exalted be the God of my salvation!
47 The God, who avengeth my cause,
And subdueth the people under me!

6 Now do I know that JEHOVAH saveth His AnointedThat He answereth Him from His holy heavens, With the saving strength of His right hand.

7 Some glory in chariots, and some, in horses;
But we glory in the Name of JEHOVAH, our God.
8 These men bow down and fall;

But we rise up, and stand erect.

9 O JEHOVAH! save the King!

May He answer us, when we call!

PSALM XXI.

IN Thy strength, JEHOVAH! the King rejoiceth, Yea, in Thy salvation how greatly doth He exult! 2 THOU hast granted unto Him the desire of His heart, And hast not withholden the request of His lips. 3 For Thou hast presented Him with choice blessings, THOU hast placed upon His head a crown of pure gold. 4 HE asked life of Thee, Thou hast granted it to Him; Even length of days, for ever and ever.

5 Great is His glory through Thy salvation;

THOU hast laid upon Him honour and majesty.

6 Truly, Thou hast made Him most blessed for ever.
THOU hast gladdened Him with the joy of Thy presence.
7 Truly, the King trusteth in JEHOVAH,

6 Now The prayer contained in the five preceding verses having been favourably answered, the king, in this and the two following verses, gratefully acknowledges the favour and protection of God. In the ninth verse, the prayer for the king is resumed.

7 Some the persons here referred to were probably vanquished enemies.

10 They are more to be desired than gold, yea, much fine gold, And sweeter than honey, yea, the dropping of the honey-combs. 11 By them, moreover, is Thy servant enlightened;

In keeping them, there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors?

Cleanse me from those, which are hidden from me! 13 From wilful transgressions, also, restrain Thy servant, Let them not have dominion over me;

Then shall I be upright,

And innocent from much sin.

14 May the words of my mouth be accepted,

And the meditation of my heart come before Thee,
O JEHOVAH! My Rock, and my Redeemer!

PSALM XX.

1 MAY JEHOVAH answer Thee in the day of trouble!
May the Name of the God of Jacob defend Thee!
2 May He send help to Thee from the sanctuary,
And from Sion support Thee!

3 May He be mindful of all Thine offerings,

And accept Thy burnt sacrifices!

4 May He give unto Thee Thy heart's desire, And fulfil all Thy designs!

5 We will sing of Thy salvation,

And, in the Name of our God, raise high our banner!
